Last September we brought six First Nations women from across the continent with unique and diverse experiences and values of what ‘sustainability’ means to them, and explored this question in Indonesia. With partial funding from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and in partnership with PEREMPUAN AMAN, an Indigenous women’s organisation in Indonesia, we met with Indigenous women in Jakarta, Bogor and in two rural communities in North Sumatra, Sihaporas and Dolok Parmonangan. Together, we shared deep yarns, deep belly laughs and homecooked meals. We explored how our fight for First Nations gender justice is the same fight across the ocean that separates us, and the ways in which women arecreating, leading and modelling sustainability practices in ways that work for us.
